Wednesday 25th - Aureole Choir, Alumni Network and Essential Employees

General

Dear Parents Update at 13.56 on Wednesday 25 March 2020   It’s Day 3 of ‘virtual’ JCG and I hope your daughter is settling into a new way of working.  I have heard some great reports from parents on how their daughter is structuring her time and how the lessons are going including form time on Zoom.  For example, work for Year 7 Biology this week is to film a dissection of a flower to find and name its parts; the videos are great.  To everyone, well done and keep going! I know our teachers are working magnificently to provide learning for your daughter.  However, if, for whatever reason, your daughter’s lessons are not going well please do let her Head of School know.  Equally if her motivation is flagging, which is expected at some point, and she needs a chat with her tutor, please just email them. What are we doing?

  • JCG open for children of Essential Employees
    • We are ready to provide care for the daughters of essential employees (if you are one of these heroes you should have been contacted). On behalf of the entire College – thank you!  Our island depends on you.
  • Challenge Week
    • We will not be requesting or taking any further payments until we know what next term looks like.
  • Our Alumni Network
    • We have many old girls living in Jersey who are formidable, as you would expect. Many of them are also over 70 years old.  So, we are creating a network of volunteers who can help any of our Old Girls who are in need of support.  If you are able to offer any help, no matter how small, please contact Barbara McGarva: [email protected]
    • Equally if you know an Old Girl who needs someone to help with her shopping, collecting medicine or anything at all,I would ask you to contact Barbara on 07829 895788 and we can discuss with them what we can do to help.
  • Y11 and Y13 – No news yet from OfQual
    • So, now is the perfect time to gain new knowledge and learn new skills.
    • Miss Lea will put a link on the College website with suggestions of online courses and how to stay motivated
    • Please share what you have learnt by doing a short video for JCGTV
    • Try a MOOC course by going to mooc.org
      • Moocs means “Massive Online Courses’ which are free to anyone who enrolls. There are over 2,900 free online courses.
      • Self-paced courses offer the greatest flexibility (and you do not need to buy a certificate)
      • Have a look, FaceTime your friends, pick the same course and study together. Or pick different courses and schedule FaceTime chats to share what you have learnt.
      • Why not learn a language together, like Mandarin or Japanese? Or a course on Superheroes: ’The rise of the superhero and their impact on pop culture’ or learn how to draw.
    • ‘In Our Time’ Podcasts provide brilliant expert coverage of Science, History, Culture etc.: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006qykl/episodes/guide
  • The Aureole Choir
    • Mr Bowley is setting up a Jersey-wide virtual choir, The Aureole Choir.  The name Aureole also means 'Corona' which aside from being a nasty virus, can also mean an aura around the Sun and other stars. As he states ‘I have set up this choir during an extraordinary time to help Jersey feel united and to keep people across Jersey singing together.’
    • We are sending out tracks to sing along to.  Everyone who signs up sings along at home, and then uploads their contribution.  We will combine all tracks, and hey presto, have performances of the whole island singing together.
  • JCGTV is now on its third day and I know Mr Marett is receiving many videos from students and staff. Thank you and keep creating.  It’s so important to be together when we can’t be together.
And finally…

We are very much hoping we will get JCG Life landing on your door mat before Easter, and if not very soon after.  This will be a timely and necessary reminder of a time when things at JCG were normal and will be so again. Yours, Carl Howarth Principal
