The motion presented in this year’s House debate was that ‘We should aim to make the global population smaller’.
Year 10 students researched the topic widely considering statistical forecasts on population expansion and decline. They also considered the effect of population change socially, politically and economically; the debate deepened further, as they explored the ethics of population control and the environmental impact on a global level by exploring variations across countries, their consumer habits and population patterns.
We were really impressed with all the students that represented their Houses in front of their year group in the debate heats. The confidence displayed, as well as the level of research and critical thinking, was outstanding, and the two winning teams were Inglis and Curie Fry, who went on to debate publicly in school assembly, showing exceptional resilience and adaptability in a high-pressure situation.
We are incredibly proud of both teams and delighted for the Inglis team who managed to capture the most student votes on the day.
