Chemistry Bake Off

Cassie and Eve, Year 13

This year, in honour of Chemistry Week and to coincide with the finale of The Great British Bake Off, the Science Department organised a Chemistry Bake Off. Students were asked to create a chemistry-themed dessert and an in-depth scientific report explaining the chemistry behind their bake. This included researching reactions, ingredient functions, and the processes involved in baking.

The outcome of the competition was outstanding. We received a wide range of creative and interesting entries, with all students producing high-quality research and bakes. It was clear that a great deal of time and effort had gone into both the baking and the scientific analysis.

Entries were judged by Eve and Cassie (Science Prefects) and Ketaki (Deputy Head Girl) across several categories, including taste, presentation and the quality of the written report. From this, six category winners were selected along with two overall winners who demonstrated excellence across all areas.

The prizes included science-themed tote bags, kindly made by Eve, as well as science-themed stickers and cookie cutters for the overall winners. The winners were as follows:

  • Best taste: Martha (8IN), Arabella (10NI)

  • Best report: Maya (7AB), Gabbie (12NI)

  • Best presentation: Maisie (9AB), Frankie (12CA)

  • Overall winners: Bea (7NI), Olivia and Izzy (13CA)

Above are some photos of the best reports. These reports show a strong ability to link molecular-level chemistry to observable changes during baking, such as texture, rise, colour, and flavour development. By using chemical equations, structural diagrams, and key terms like gluten formation, gas expansion, caramelisation, and the Maillard reaction, the students have shown clear scientific understanding. This work reflects excellent research skills and accurate application of chemistry concepts.

We want to thank everyone who took part, this competition was so enjoyable and such a good way for students to showcase their chemistry and scientific knowledge
