The perspective of one of the House Art award winners

Freya, (Year 12)

I’m so happy to have won an award for my piece! It was my GCSE final piece that was inspired by many artists like Owen Rival and Laura Oldfield Field who motivated my bright colour palette and the idea of capturing mundane everyday moments and turning it into something more interesting and emotive. I really enjoyed the process of coming up with the piece as it’s a unique combination of all the artists I studied throughout my sketchbook which followed the theme of ‘Narrative’. It was also nice to incorporate my textiles when using machine embroidery on the canvas to create the duvet.

I’m really proud of my piece as it was an independent project, although supported along the way by Miss Rondel I had almost complete freedom on which artist I chose and how I responded to them. This made all of my and my classmates’ sketchbooks all go in different directions that concluded with very varied and original final pieces.
