At Jersey College Preparatory School, our science curriculum is rooted in the Jersey Curriculum and designed to inspire curiosity, creativity and critical thinking. We aim for all pupils to develop a secure understanding of key scientific concepts while learning to think and work like scientists—questioning, observing, investigating and drawing conclusions based on evidence. Through this, children recognise the relevance of science in everyday life and develop the confidence to engage with the world around them.

Science is taught through a clear and progressive sequence of knowledge and skills, with lessons that are practical, enquiry-based, and rich in opportunities for discussion. We place a strong emphasis on developing scientific vocabulary and oracy, enabling pupils to explain their thinking and reason effectively. Learning is enhanced through hands-on experiences, meaningful cross-curricular links, and regular opportunities to revisit and build on prior knowledge. In the Early Years, science begins through exploration and play, fostering curiosity and early investigative skills within Understanding the World

The impact of our curriculum is seen in pupils who are confident, articulate, and inquisitive learners. They can apply their knowledge, use scientific language accurately and approach investigations with independence and resilience. Ongoing assessment, including pupil discussion and the quality of work produced, ensures that all children make strong progress and are well prepared for the next stage of their education.

Beyond the classroom, science supports pupils’ personal development by promoting teamwork, perseverance, and environmental awareness. Pupils are encouraged to share their ideas, ask questions, and take ownership of their learning, with opportunities to take on leadership roles such as Science Ambassadors and contribute to the wider life of the school.
