At JCP, our curriculum is designed to be ambitious, broad and inclusive. It reflects our core values of Aspire, Inquire, Excel and Belong and is underpinned by the principles of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Through a carefully sequenced curriculum, we aim to equip all pupils with the knowledge, skills, understanding and cultural capital they need to flourish both now and in later life. We strive to develop confident, resilient and compassionate learners who are prepared for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of the future.
The Development of the Child
At JCP, we recognise that education extends beyond academic achievement. Our curriculum is designed to support the development of the whole child, fostering intellectual, emotional, social, physical and moral growth. Through our values of Aspire, Inquire, Excel and Belong, pupils develop confidence, resilience, independence and compassion. We provide opportunities for leadership, creativity, reflection, wellbeing and personal responsibility, ensuring pupils are prepared not only for their next stage of education but also for life beyond school. The principles of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child underpin our approach and support pupils in developing a strong sense of self, belonging and global citizenship.
Entitlement
We believe every child is entitled to a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum. Our curriculum fully reflects the requirements of the Jersey Curriculum whilst also providing a rich range of experiences that extend learning beyond the classroom. Through high-quality teaching, enrichment opportunities, educational visits, Forest School, sport, music, the arts and leadership experiences, pupils develop a wide range of knowledge, skills and experiences. We ensure that all pupils have access to opportunities that broaden horizons, raise aspirations and cultivate a lifelong love of learning.
Equity
Inclusion sits at the heart of our curriculum design. We strive to remove barriers to learning and ensure that every pupil can access, participate in and succeed within the curriculum regardless of background, need or starting point. Through adaptive teaching, targeted intervention, effective use of assessment and strong pastoral support, we seek to meet the needs of all learners, including pupils with SEND, multilingual learners, vulnerable pupils and those requiring additional challenge. We celebrate diversity and create an environment where every child feels valued, respected and able to achieve their potential.
Quality
We are committed to delivering a curriculum that is ambitious, coherent and carefully sequenced. Subject leaders identify the key knowledge, skills and vocabulary that pupils need to acquire and ensure progression from Reception to Year 6. High-quality teaching, effective assessment and evidence-informed practice support pupils in knowing more, remembering more and doing more over time. Through continual evaluation, professional development and curriculum refinement, we seek to ensure that all pupils receive the highest quality educational experience and are well prepared for the challenges and opportunities of the future.
Curriculum Implementation
The curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure that knowledge and skills build progressively from Reception to Year 6. Subject leaders have identified the key substantive and disciplinary knowledge that pupils need to acquire at each stage and have mapped clear progression across all curriculum areas. Teachers use assessment to identify misconceptions, adapt learning and ensure pupils successfully access the intended curriculum. Learning is designed to promote retrieval, application, problem-solving and increasingly independent thinking. Pupils are supported through adaptive teaching approaches to ensure that all learners, including those with SEND, ML and other vulnerable groups, can access the full curriculum and achieve success.
High Expectations
High expectations are central to effective teaching and learning at JCP. We believe that all pupils can achieve highly when provided with appropriate challenge, support and encouragement. Expectations for presentation, effort, conduct and academic achievement are consistently high across all curriculum areas. Teachers communicate ambition clearly and foster a culture where pupils are encouraged to take risks, embrace challenge and strive for excellence.
Impact - What difference does our curriculum make?
Through our ambitious, inclusive and carefully sequenced curriculum, pupils develop secure knowledge, skills and understanding across all curriculum areas. They become confident readers, articulate communicators, resilient learners and responsible citizens. Pupils achieve highly from their starting points, demonstrate positive attitudes towards learning and are well prepared academically, socially and emotionally for the next stage of their education. By the end of Year 6, pupils embody our values of Aspire, Inquire, Excel and Belong and are equipped with the knowledge, cultural capital and personal qualities needed to flourish in a changing world.
