Chemistry

A foundation in scientific thinking

Purpose

The Chemistry Department aims to provide students with a strong foundation in chemical principles and scientific thinking. Students develop their analytical skills, logical reasoning, and a clear understanding of the role chemistry plays in everyday life and global challenges. The curriculum is delivered through engaging instruction and meaningful practical work in well-resourced and purpose-built laboratories and prepares students for future studies and responsible participation in a scientifically informed society.

 Content

Year 7 Chemistry is like unlocking the secrets of the universe! Our students will dive into the world of tiny particles, discovering how everything around us is made up of atoms, and how these atoms are joined together to form many different amazing compounds. Students will have lots of opportunities to get hands-on in the laboratory, learning exciting new practical skills as they experiment with chemical reactions that show just how substances can interact and transform. Whether it’s heating using Bunsen burners, or making careful observations as reactions fizz and change color, chemistry will come to life in ways that make learning both fun and mind-blowing! It’s all about exploring the building blocks of matter and understanding how they shape the world we live in.

Beyond the classroom

The curriculum is complemented by a student-lead KS3 Science Club at lunchtimes and also a Chemistry Clinic to help students solve those tricky homework problems.
