Introduction to computing
Purpose
The KS3 computer science curriculum aims to introduce students to the fundamental concepts of computing, including programming, data representation, and digital literacy. It fosters problem-solving skills, logical thinking, and creativity through hands-on activities and projects. By exploring the basics of algorithms, coding, and computer systems, students gain a solid foundation for future learning and develop an understanding of how technology impacts the world around them. This curriculum prepares students for more advanced studies in computer science and equips them with essential skills for the digital age.
Content
In Year 8 Computer Science, students build on their foundational knowledge and dive deeper into exciting areas of technology. They explore web design, learning to create and structure websites using HTML and CSS. Students also study computer systems, gaining an understanding of how hardware and software work together. The concept of binary is introduced, allowing students to grasp how data is represented and processed in computers. Further programming challenges help students refine their coding skills, fostering logical thinking and problem-solving. Additionally, students get a hands-on experience in game design, where they apply their programming knowledge to create interactive and engaging games. This year empowers students with the technical skills and creativity needed for future digital projects.
