Introduction to computing

Purpose

The KS3 computer science curriculum aims to introduce students to the fundamental concepts of computing, including programming, data representation, and digital literacy. It fosters problem-solving skills, logical thinking, and creativity through hands-on activities and projects. By exploring the basics of algorithms, coding, and computer systems, students gain a solid foundation for future learning and develop an understanding of how technology impacts the world around them. This curriculum prepares students for more advanced studies in computer science and equips them with essential skills for the digital age.

Content

In Year 7 Computer Science, students explore key concepts that shape the digital world. They begin by examining the impact of technology on society, understanding both its benefits and challenges. Students dive into Artificial Intelligence (AI), learning about its role in everyday life and how it works. Through hands-on programming, they develop problem-solving skills by creating simple projects and coding challenges. Networking introduces students to how devices communicate with each other, while working with spreadsheets helps them organize and analyse data effectively. This year provides a strong foundation in the essential areas of technology, preparing students for more advanced topics in future years.
