Religious Studies

Understanding global cultures

Purpose

Religious Studies in secondary school plays a vital academic role in helping students develop critical thinking, analytical skills, and a deep understanding of global cultures and belief systems. Through the study of major world religions and secular worldviews, students learn to examine ethical issues, evaluate differing perspectives, and build reasoned arguments. This subject fosters intellectual curiosity and encourages respectful dialogue, equipping students with the knowledge and skills needed for further education and a diverse, interconnected world. In addition to its academic value, Religious Studies also promotes social awareness, empathy, and mutual respect, preparing students to engage thoughtfully and responsibly in a multicultural society.

Content

Students consider a range of ethical issues. Topics include animal rights, euthanasia and relationships and family. The topics are studied from the legal/medical perspective in the UK, Islam, and Christianity. Students will have the opportunity to evaluate different world views which will help them form their own opinions with valid academic reasons. Students will end the year studying Islam and this will give them the opportunity to research a specific part of the religion and to present to their class.

Beyond the classroom

Students will have a guided tour of the local Mosque.
