Design and Technology

Exploring the design process

Purpose

The KS3 Design & Technology curriculum aims to develop students' creativity, problem-solving skills, and technical knowledge through a range of hands-on projects. It introduces them to a range of materials, tools, and digital technologies while fostering an understanding of design principles and safe working practices. Students learn to research, prototype, and evaluate their ideas, preparing them for further study and real-world applications. Collaboration, resilience, and innovation are key themes, helping students build confidence in designing and making functional products. This foundation equips them with essential skills for future careers in design, engineering, and technology-related fields.

Content

In Design and Technology, students start by exploring the design process behind every product we use. This journey begins with identifying a need, followed by research, initial ideas, development, final design, manufacture, and evaluation. Mastering this process will lay the foundation for all your projects.

Next, theycomplete safety lessons to confidently and safely use tools like fret saws, the band sander, drills, and the polisher, essential skills for hands-on work.

Their first project will involve designing and manufacturing a promotional LED torch made from acrylic, complete with its own electronics. They create a stylish and functional torch to promote a company, charity, club, or society of their choice.

For their second project, you’ll craft a mobile phone holder by laminating plywood using PVA glue, clamps, and a custom former. The holder, resting on a pine wood base, celebrates the beauty of wood grain and will be finished with a wax polish.
