Nurturing a love for language learning
Purpose
The French curriculum for Years 7, 8, and 9 builds on students' knowledge of the French language and culture. Year 7 French revisits themes that some students have seen at primary school, and introduces it to others. It focuses on developing communication skills such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Through dynamic lessons, students acquire vocabulary and consolidate grammatical concepts. The curriculum fosters cultural awareness by exposing students to Francophone traditions and stories, while also highlighting Jersey's French-speaking heritage. This approach nurtures a love for language learning and prepares students for GCSEs, equipping them with the skills and confidence needed for more advanced French studies in the age of global communication.
Content
The emphasis in Year 8 is to consolidate their Year 7 learning and continue students’ enjoyment of French. Students learn how to:
buy items at the shop
talk about school life and routine
take transport and plan journeys
order food and drink
communicate at the doctor’s
talk about free time in the past and future time frames
As they learn the language, students will also build some knowledge of relevant French culture.
