Mathematics

An interconnected subject

Purpose

Mathematics is an interconnected subject in which pupils need to be able to move fluently between representations of mathematical ideas. The programme of study for Key Stage 3 is organised into 4 distinct domains, which we label as Number, Algebra, Geometry and Data. Pupils should build on their existing knowledge and skill from  Key Stage 2 and make connections across mathematical ideas to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving increasingly sophisticated problems. They should also apply their mathematical knowledge in Science, Geography, Computer Science and other subjects.

Content

Year 8 builds on prior learning, deepening understanding and introducing more complex topics. In Number, students work with powers, roots, ratio, and proportional reasoning. Algebra extends to solving more demanding expressions and equations, linear graphs, and exploring sequences in greater depth. In Shape, students study transformations, areas of circles, constructions, and begin working with volume and surface area. Statistics involves comparing and analysing data sets which are given with frequencies, and Probability explores combined events and experimental outcomes. Students further work on their problem-solving skills and begin tackling more abstract concepts, preparing them for the challenges of Year 9.
