Exciting discoveries

Purpose

Year 8 Biology develops critical thinking, independence, and a deeper understanding of the world around us. Through hands-on experiments, research, and presentations, students refine their analytical and communication skills. Exploring health and lifestyles fosters awareness of personal well-being and the impact of choices on the body. Investigating biological processes and ecology nurtures curiosity and an appreciation for the delicate balance of nature. By questioning evidence and drawing conclusions, students gain confidence in scientific inquiry; skills that extend beyond the classroom into everyday life.

Content

Year 8 Biology builds on key scientific ideas, helping students explore how life functions and adapts. In Health and Lifestyles, they’ll dive into the importance of nutrition, test different foods for key nutrients, and discover how smoking, alcohol, and drugs affect the body. In Biological Processes, they’ll uncover how plants make their own food through photosynthesis, explore leaf structure, and compare aerobic and anaerobic respiration—including how yeast helps produce food and drink! Finally, in Ecology, students will investigate food chains and webs, analyse predator-prey relationships, and examine the incredible adaptations that help organisms survive. With plenty of practical activities and thought-provoking discussions, students will gain a deeper understanding of the living world and their place within it.

Beyond the classroom

Opportunities include Science Fun Club, conduct multiple hands-on experiments, and develop their research and presentation skills.
