Chemistry

A foundation in scientific thinking

Purpose

The Chemistry Department aims to provide students with a strong foundation in chemical principles and scientific thinking. Students develop their analytical skills, logical reasoning, and a clear understanding of the role chemistry plays in everyday life and global challenges. The curriculum is delivered through engaging instruction and meaningful practical work in well-resourced and purpose-built laboratories and prepares students for future studies and responsible participation in a scientifically informed society.

Content

Year 8 Chemistry builds on student’s laboratory skills and scientific knowledge as they embark on their (sometimes explosive) chemical journey starting with the world of acids and alkalis. Our students will then explore the reactivity series, discovering which metals are the boldest and most reactive and using their knowledge to make predictions of reactions. They’ll hone their skills on writing equations and solving chemical calculations alongside unlocking the secrets of ions and ionic compounds, learning how tiny particles can form giant, stable structures. That’s then followed by a dive into the world of fuels, learning how chemistry powers our world and balancing that against the problems of pollution. Chemistry has never been so relevant or exciting!

Beyond the classroom

Running alongside the taught curriculum is a student-lead KS3 science club and Chemistry Clinic plus the opportunity to participate in special investigations such as the Forensic Science Project.
