Nurturing a love for language learning
Purpose
The French curriculum for Years 7, 8, and 9 builds on students' knowledge of the French language and culture. Year 7 French revisits themes that some students have seen at primary school, and introduces it to others. It focuses on developing communication skills such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Through dynamic lessons, students acquire vocabulary and consolidate grammatical concepts. The curriculum fosters cultural awareness by exposing students to Francophone traditions and stories, while also highlighting Jersey's French-speaking heritage. This approach nurtures a love for language learning and prepares students for GCSEs, equipping them with the skills and confidence needed for more advanced French studies in the age of global communication.
Content
In Year 9, French students build on the Year 8 content and work towards more of a GCSE standard. They learn how to:
talk about using technology
plan a trip to Paris
describe getting around a town
talk about healthy living
express themselves about free time and other topics using the three time frames and more complex structures
As they learn the language, students will also build some knowledge of relevant French culture. We also write to pen pals at a partnership school.
