We believe that the JCG experience extends further than our walls and becomes part of the fabric of our students’ lives as they pass through our care.

To put it simply, through our belief in them and our care for them, we empower our students to want to build a better world.

It is a great honour to be the Principal of Jersey College for Girls and a great privilege to be given the opportunity to educate other people’s children.

Sadly, we often hear mistaken ‘myths’ about the College. We hope this will help dispel those misconceptions and look forward to your visit, where we are sure, you too will feel the same strength of belonging and enjoyment as experienced by all within our College family.

Is it true that you need to take a really difficult exam to get into JCG?

There used to be an exam to get into Y7, but now we look at CAT scores, if students have taken CATs, and the report from the student’s primary school. All students with an average CAT score of over 100 will be considered.

For entry to other years, there is an age-appropriate exam.

Is it true that the College isn’t as caring as other schools and is only interested in exam results?

This is something that people who are of course very proud of the exam results our students achieve at JCG. One of the reasons for their success is because they are extremely well supported.

At JCG, we have an ethos of care to enable our students to thrive. It is wrong to say that achieving good results and caring cannot exist together, in fact, we believe that they are intrinsically linked. If you struggle to believe this, please talk with our present and past students. The College also continuously receives high praise from current and past students and parents about our caring and nurturing culture. Our value of ‘Belonging’ is more than a word on a page.

Is it true that teachers only like you if you are smart?

This is not true. All the students at JCG are treated the same, no matter what. The teachers want to see every student progress, and they will appreciate it if you work hard and participate in their lessons. You don’t have to know all the information, and as long as you are trying, that is enough.

The most important thing is to work hard and ask a question if you are unsure.

Is it true that there are many detentions at JCG?

There are no detentions at JCG. However, you might be asked to stay at lunchtime to complete some unfinished homework.

Whilst each department will have its own policy with regards to homework submissions, students will always be given opportunities to complete homework and meet expectations as well as support within the subject in which they are struggling to complete their homework.

Is it true that there is no support for students when they find things difficult?

We have extensive wellbeing and academic support in place for students. Our tutors and student support team help our students daily (hourly if necessary). We also have counsellors available at all times in College.

There are numerous academic support clinics and, if a student needs individual support, our teaching.

At JCG, we are like a family and the whole College acts as a support network for each other.

Is it true that you are bullied if you are different?

The incidence of bullying in the College is very low. Our College community is diverse and we work hard to make sure we are inclusive and offer equal opportunities to all. We have a clear counter-bullying policy, we have systems in place to report bullying and we take action when students report bullying.

Is it true that JCG is an expensive school to go to?

JCG is a fee-paying school but there is a strong bursary programme. Nearly 10% of the students receive some level of assistance with fees. If a family cannot afford College, they can apply for financial assistance to help pay all or part of the Additional assistance of up to £1,000 is automatically allocated to students receiving assistance towards the fees so that they never need to worry about the other costs such as trips, equipment and uniform as well as short term assistance. All requests for financial assistance are treated in the strictest confidence.
