Developing creativity

Purpose

The practical Drama curriculum for Years 7, 8, and 9 (making, performing and response) aims to develop students' creativity, communication, and collaboration skills through engaging performance-based activities. By exploring a variety of dramatic techniques, students build confidence, empathy, and an appreciation of different perspectives. Our curriculum fosters critical thinking and problem-solving abilities as students devise, rehearse, and perform original and scripted pieces. The practical experience gained in Years 7, 8 and 9 lays a strong foundation for further study in Drama, enhancing students' overall personal and social development.

Content

Year 7 is a full and fun-packed year in Drama. Students learn many techniques either linked to improvisation or script. They start by looking at different stage configurations and the challenges of each, then perform on the different types of stages. They then work on basic techniques like tableau, flashbacks and slow motion, applying them to a range of scenes where they play spies and secret agents. A more topical module follows, where their skills as narrators are developed. They also look at short scripts and interpret them in a full performance. Finally, Year 7 students enact exaggerated characters in the comedic module of Melodrama. Here they learn about stock characters and the origins of Pantomime.

Beyond the classroom

Junior Drama Club - once a week with the Drama Captain and Prefects - a chance to mix with older students from Y8 and 9.
