Encouraging a love of history
Purpose
The aims and purpose of our Year 9 history studies are to expose and connect the events of the 20th century with our understanding of the current world. In this course we explore the political, social, racial, cultural and economic events starting with the new world order following WW1 through to the Civil Rights movements of the 1960s. The curriculum empowers students to gain a deeper empathy and awareness of challenges facing our modern society. We use a variety of techniques: from role play and debates, to formal presentations and written submissions. The course is designed to enable discussion and be mindful of multiple perspectives.
Content
During Year 9, students will study the effects of world war one on shaping the modern world, the boom and gloom of the 1920s and 1930s, the rise of dictatorships, life for ordinary people in Nazi Germany and an in-depth study of local History during the Occupation. Students conclude the year looking at the political, social and cultural developments of the later twentieth century. In year nine pupils make their GCSE option choices; and as a department, it is very much hoped that pupils will continue their study of history in order to further develop their understanding of their place in the world.
