Purpose

The Year 8 and 9 Spanish beginners' curriculum aims to introduce students to the basics of Spanish language and culture. It focuses on developing essential communication skills such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Through engaging activities, students build foundational vocabulary and understand key grammar concepts.

The curriculum also promotes cultural awareness, exposing students to the traditions and histories of Spanish-speaking countries. This approach fosters a love for language learning and prepares students for advanced Spanish studies, equipping them with the confidence to communicate in a globalised world.

Content

In Year 9, Spanish students build on the basics that they have learned in Year 8. They learn how to:

  • describe the area where they live

  • talk about their home and their bedroom

  • convey details about their routine

  • talk about the Christmas festival

  • discuss holidays – what they normally do, what they did and what they are going to do

  • describe food and drink

During Year 9, students select whether to continue with Spanish to GCSE. We are pleased that we have many students who wish to continue. Those that do not select Spanish still enjoy developing their knowledge of the language.
