Encouraging a love of history

Purpose

The purpose of the Year 7 History curriculum is to introduce students to some of the key periods in British history, from 1066 and the Battle of Hastings to Elizabeth I and her victory over the Spanish Armada. The curriculum also focuses on developing key skills such as being able to write your own account of a historical event, make inferences from historical sources and assess sources for bias. The curriculum encourages a love of history through fun activities such as quizzes, storyboards and the opportunity to make short films telling the story of a historical event.

Content

Students are introduced to a wide range of historical content in Key Stage 3. In Year 7 we start with the Battle of Hastings and the Norman Conquest and progress through a range of significant events including the Black Death, Peasants Revolt, Henry VIII and the reign of Elizabeth I. We include lots of work on contemporary sources and interpretations of the past to encourage students to think about how history is constructed.

Beyond the classroom

Opportunities include getting involved in the History club where students can design and make things for the department board and play a variety of history-themed games and quizzes.
