1:1 student devices bring powerful opportunities for learning. They allow all learning resources to be available to students 24 hours a day, access to internet-based learning, collaboration in real time, and help develop expertise with Office applications. While the students are in school, we manage their devices using software called JAMF.

JAMF

JAMF allows us to ensure that the apps required for learning are up-to-date so that all students have the same, most recent software version. With JAMF, any new apps can be distributed to students instantly and remotely. Students sometimes forget their ipad passcode – particularly in the early days of their iPad ownership – and with JAMF we can unlock the device, without having to erase all the data. We can also restore and locate mislaid devices. Very importantly, JAMF ensures that our internet filtering is completely robust whatever additional devices students have in school.

Ipads come packed with an array of apps, many but not all of which support learning and teaching. JAMF allows us to focus students’ attention during the school day only on those apps which they need for their learning, while ensuring full access outside of school hours, helping students manage distractions.

Restrictions are age-dependent, and as students move through the year groups, they will take greater responsibility for managing their technology. Restrictions only apply from 08:30 to 15:30 on school days, meaning that all apps reappear at the end of the school day, and during holidays and weekends.

At home, parents may wish to use the JAMF Parent app to help manage the use of the iPad at home. This enables parents to hide apps and setup time limits on their daughter’s ipad, as she learns to establish good digital habits. The Lightspeed Parent app can also be used to monitor web activity, block websites and pause the internet if needed.

Outside of school hours, we offer three options for parents to help with managing iPad use at home.

  • Option 1) School JAMF restrictions apply from 08:30 to 15:30, outside of which times parents can choose how they wish to manage the apps their daughter has access to.

  • Option 2) JAMF extends to 24 hours a day, but allows a wider range of selected apps, including entertainment apps, outside of the school day. Social media and messaging apps are not available. JAMF continues to provide internet filtering.

  • Option 3) School JAMF restrictions apply 24 hours a day meaning that only apps that are necessary for learning appear on the ipad whether in school or at home, and JAMF provides round the clock internet filtering on the device.
