Understanding global cultures

Purpose

Religious Studies in secondary school plays a vital academic role in helping students develop critical thinking, analytical skills, and a deep understanding of global cultures and belief systems. Through the study of major world religions and secular worldviews, students learn to examine ethical issues, evaluate differing perspectives, and build reasoned arguments. This subject fosters intellectual curiosity and encourages respectful dialogue, equipping students with the knowledge and skills needed for further education and a diverse, interconnected world. In addition to its academic value, Religious Studies also promotes social awareness, empathy, and mutual respect, preparing students to engage thoughtfully and responsibly in a multicultural society.

Content

Students are introduced to philosophy in year 8. We investigate ultimate questions, researching the thoughts of philosophers and our own views. Christianity is revisited in year 8 looking specifically at the life of Jesus. We end the year by looking at influential figures in religion. Students then work on a charity research task with the aim to raise money for a local charity.

Beyond the classroom

Students will work on creating an effective way to help others in society.
