Optional subject

ICT is everywhere—from how we learn and collaborate to how businesses, media and public services operate. Studying ICT gives you practical, transferable digital skills and an understanding of how technology impacts society. You will learn to use common software confidently, solve problems with data, and present information effectively—skills valued in every pathway at GCSE and beyond.

Why study ICT?

ICT develops creativity, precision and resilience. You’ll work both independently and in teams to analyse needs, design solutions, and evaluate outcomes. The course blends hands‑on tasks (document production, databases, presentations, spreadsheets, website authoring) with theory (hardware, software, networks, security, e‑safety, ethics and the wider effects of IT), preparing you for further study and the modern workplace.

Some of the possible career options: Web development. Project Management. Digital Marketing

This subject goes well with any combination but could specifically go well with: Media and Photography

The Course

We follow the Cambridge IGCSE ICT (0983 9-1)syllabus. The content combines theoretical understanding with practical skills across three strands:

  • Core theory — Types/components of computer systems; input/output; storage; networks and communication; effects of using IT; ICT applications; safety & security; ethics; and system development concepts

  • Practical applications (Paper 2) — Document production, databases and presentations: styles, proofing, layout, mail‑merge; designing queries and reports; effective, accessible presentations.

  • Data handling & Web authoring (Paper 3) — Spreadsheets (functions, validation, charts) and website authoring (structure, hyperlinks, media, testing).

How are you assessed?

Assessment is by three externally assessed papers:

  • Paper 1: Theory — 1 hour 30 minutes40% of the qualification, assessing core ICT knowledge and understanding (all questions compulsory).

  • Paper 2: Document Production, Databases and Presentations — 2 hours 15 minutes30%, assessing practical skills in three applications (all tasks compulsory).

  • Paper 3: Spreadsheets and Website Authoring — 2 hours 15 minutes30%, assessing spreadsheet techniques and web authoring (all tasks compulsory).

Where can ICT take you?

ICT provides a foundation for subjects and careers that rely on confident digital literacy: business, media, design, science, health, and more. It also supports progression to A‑Level and vocational pathways in IT, Computer Science and Digital Media.
