Why study Media?

Whenever you watch television, stream films, scroll through social media or listen to a podcast, you are engaging with media.

GCSE Media Studies helps students understand the powerful role the media plays in shaping our views of the world. From news and advertising to social media, film and television, the media influences how we think about people, culture, politics and identity.

Students develop the ability to question and challenge media messages rather than passively consuming them. Media Studies is discussion-based, analytical and creative, making it ideal for students who enjoy sharing ideas, debating viewpoints and thinking critically about the world around them.

What will you study?

Students analyse a wide range of contemporary and historical media products, exploring how images, sounds, language and representations are used to create meaning. They also learn about the media industry and how production, ownership and regulation influence media products, as well as how different audiences consume and interpret media texts.

Students will study a range of media forms, including:

  • Television

  • Online Media

  • Advertising

  • Film Marketing

  • Magazines

  • Newspapers

  • Music Video

  • Radio

  • Video Games

Alongside analytical study, there is a significant practical element. Students plan and create their own media products, applying their knowledge of media language, representations, industry and audience to produce work such as music videos, magazines and advertisements in response to a brief.

How are you assessed?

GCSE Media Studies is assessed through a combination of examinations and practical coursework:

  • Component 1: Written examination (1 hour 30 minutes) 40%

  • Component 2: Written examination (1 hour 30 minutes) 30%

  • Component 3: Non-exam assessment (Media Production) 30%

Trips, Opportunities and Progression

Media Studies offers exciting opportunities beyond the classroom. Students may take part in trips, workshops and talks that provide insight into real media industries and careers.

Through discussion, debate and creative production, students develop digital literacy, teamwork and communication skills, while building confidence and independence. The subject also develops valuable transferable skills including critical thinking, research, planning, creativity and essay writing.

GCSE Media Studies provides a strong foundation for A Level Media Studies and supports success in related subjects such as English Literature, History, Drama and Art. It is an excellent starting point for students interested in future careers in journalism, film and television production, advertising, digital marketing, design, social media and the wider creative industries.
