House Poetry 2024

This year, the theme was 'Nostalgia: Childhood Memories'.

UPPER SCHOOL WINNER - Kate (Year 12)

We would lie on the sofa, feet up
My mother and I, cuddled as we lay
The steam from my tea curling from my cup,
The TV seeming far away.

We would lay in the bed, all of us,
My father, my mother and me,
Laughing about all with no hesitance or fuss,
Now there is two, where there was three.

Today, I must make my own cup of tea,
And laugh with only one that I love,
Now when I lay in my bed, it’s only me.
For my childhood is not here, but above.

I understand now, why I was told to enjoy being a kid,
Because now I wish that there was more that I did.

LOWER SCHOOL WINNER - Arabella

The white musk smell drifted through the room,
Seeping into the velvet furniture,
And in my grandmother’s lap
I sunk deep into her rich perfume.

The wallpaper told stories
And the carpet held memories,
‘Sweetheart,’ she whispered tenderly,
As she brushed out my hair

And the fabric of the delicate sewn dress,
The floral pattern that still remembers my skin;
Though at that time I may have been young,
I knew still that she wouldn’t stay for so long.
