Returning to College

We are excited and delighted that our students and staff will all be returning to College on a full timetable on Thursday 3rd September with as close to a normal routine and community as we can provide while keeping within the guidelines. The safety of our students and staff comes before everything. The purpose of this letter is to explain what we are doing. Please do read it carefully with your daughter.

Returning after off-island travel

Students returning to Jersey with a green travel history should not attend JCG until they receive a negative test result. Students with an amber or red travel history should not attend until they have completed the necessary isolation period; for amber countries this is until they have received a negative day 5 test result, for red countries this is 14 days. Please do contact us if your daughter is unable to attend College because you are awaiting a test results or are isolating.

Attendance

All students should now attend JCG unless they are isolating due to recent travel or because they or a household member has symptoms of COVID-19 or there are other reasons for absence (such as shielding due to health conditions). Please notify your us, as normal, if your child is unable to attend so that we are aware and can discuss this with you and make decisions about how best to support and educate your daughter.

Underlying health conditions and higher risk groups

Students who are considered clinically to be high risk individuals (extremely vulnerable) should continue to shield and should not be expected to attend.

Moderate risk (vulnerable) people are those considered to be at a higher risk of serious illness from COVID-19. A small number of children will fall into this category and parents should follow medical advice if their child is in this category.

Students who live in a household with someone who is clinically high risk can attend JCG. For such students strict social distancing is encouraged and should be adhered to. If there is any uncertainty, medical advice should be sought.

Travelling to and from JCG

Students and parents are encouraged to walk or cycle where possible. School buses will operate at normal capacity with the introduction of additional public health safety measures that Liberty Bus have in place. When dropping your daughter off in the carpark, please do not congregate with other parents and maintain social distancing at all times.

Uniform

Your daughter should arrive to school wearing her normal full summer uniform. Please see below a link for ease:

https://jerseycollegeforgirls.com/about-us/school-uniform-shop/

Please check your daughter’s uniform as we are aware that she will not have worn this since March and may well have grown. New dresses may need to be purchased. We do have some blazers in stock therefore should you require a new blazer please email June Fosse on j.fosse@jcg.sch.je

Day 1

On arrival to school on Thursday 3rd September your daughter should go directly to her form room as listed below. Prefects will be around the College to help our new students.

At least 1 metre physical distancing between all adults and between adults and children wherever possible should be followed. No physical distancing requirement between students in their year group.

Students from different year groups will be kept separate as much as possible. Therefore, please remind your daughter that she always needs to socially distance from students in other year groups, for example, when queuing for any food from the Dome.

Our Dome will be providing a normal service but will operate a smartcard payment policy only. No cash will be accepted therefore please ensure that your daughter’s card is topped up via our ‘TouchTopup’ system.

PE and Drama lessons

PE and Drama lessons will run as normal. From Friday 4th September, your daughter will need to bring her kit to school as our changing rooms will operate as normal.

Lockers

All students will be allocated a locker on the first day of term and these can now be used.

Routines

We will remind students about the increased hygiene routines. Students will be required to gel their hands and wipe desks at the beginning of every new lesson. Desks will be configured to comply with social distancing for our staff and all students will face the front.

Year 7

During form time, Year 7 students will receive their smartcards and their rucksacks. In their first Computer Science lesson, they will be taught how to use their school email and to access their Office 365 account. We will also ensure that they leave their last lesson before lunch a few minutes early, to allow them additional orientation time and be first in the queue!

I hope this covers many of your questions. Below is Government guidance in the form of a checklist which I hope is useful.

When we returned after lockdown in the Summer term, the whole JCG community was incredible in following the guidance and enabling us all to enjoy being back at our College. I have every confidence that September will be just the same.

Yours,

Carl Howarth

Principal

Checklist for parents and carers

Monitor your child’s health and keep them home from school if they are ill.

Teach and model good hygiene practices for your children:

  • Explain that they should wash their hands with soap and water frequently. As a minimum, children should wash their hands, on leaving home, before and after eating, after using any shared equipment / resources, after using the toilet, after sneezing or coughing and on returning home
  • If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitiser (with 60-70% alcohol content). Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
  • Ensure waste (such as used tissues) is safely collected, stored and disposed of.
  • Cough and sneeze into a tissue or your elbow and avoid touching your face, eyes, mouth, nose.

Encourage your children to ask questions and express their feelings with you and their teachers. Remember that your child may have different reactions to stress; be patient and understanding.

Prevent stigma by using facts and reminding your children to be considerate of one another

explain to your child why it’s important that they must arrive and leave the grounds at their allotted time

let younger children know that parents are not allowed into the provision and they will say goodbye to them outside the door where they will be met by a member of staff they know

at pick up time talk to your child about trying to remember all their things

let younger children know that you will be waiting outside to collect them

Coordinate with the school to receive information and ask how you can support school safety efforts.

Checklist for children and students

1. Know that you are not alone and talk to someone you trust, like your parent or teacher so that you can help keep yourself and your school safe and healthy. Ask questions, educate yourself and get information from reliable sources. In a situation like this it is normal to feel sad, worried, confused, scared or angry.

2. Protect yourself and others

Wash your hands frequently, always with soap and water for at least 20 seconds

Remember to not touch your face

Do not share cups, eating utensils, food or drinks with others

3. Be a leader in keeping yourself, your school, family and community healthy

Share what you learn about preventing disease with your family and friends, especially with younger children

Model good practices such as sneezing or coughing into your elbow and washing your hands, especially for younger family members

4. Don’t tease anyone about being sick; remember that the virus doesn’t follow geographical boundaries, ethnicities, age, ability or gender.

5. Tell your parents, another family member, or a caregiver if you feel sick, and ask to stay at home.
