Friday 19th June Update - Welcome back to all students

Dear Parents and Students,   Update as of 14.43 on Friday 19 June 2020 I hope you and your loved ones are well.  We have so enjoyed having Year 12 in this week.  I also hope the exams have gone well for Year 7 - 10.  We are now ready to welcome all our students back over the next week.  If you haven't done so already, please do read through the Safe Return guidance with your daughter.  While it is exciting to be coming back, we do all need to ensure we do it safely.   What do we know?

  • Getting to College:
  • If at all possible, please avoid using the School Bus or public transport
  • If you need to use the bus, please refer to the Liberty Bus website which has full information on the current school bus services:
  • Victoria College will be opening their bottom gate to allow students to walk up through their grounds to access JCG rather than up College Hill
  • The much anticipated and long-awaited handover from the old Student Senior Leadership team to the new one occurs on Wednesday at 1pm.  We will be live streaming this event and also videoing it too for JCGtv.  I am so pleased we can do this face to face with our students in Year 12 and 13 rather than the cold and oddly sterile environment of online.
  • Motivation Webinar for Parents:  Details of the event are as follows:
                Event Title:

How to help your child increase and sustain their motivation                 Date: Wednesday 24th June                 Time: 6:00 – 7:00 pm                 Cost: Free                 Sign-up Link:

  • College response to Black Lives Matter:
  • I am looking forward to this afternoon's online discussion with our students and staff.
  • In response to our students' desire to know and understand more about Black History, Mr Langhorn noticed that this week the National Theatre at Home is showing 'Small Island'. This is about the Windrush generation.  Please note it is rated 15 so only suitable for the Upper years.  This epic and much-loved stage production of Andrea Levy’s Orange Prize-winning was filmed live on stage during its sold-out run in 2019. Small Island embarks on a journey from Jamaica to Britain, through the Second World War to 1948 – the year the HMT Empire Windrush docked at Tilbury. The play follows three intricately connected stories: Hortense yearns for a new life away from rural Jamaica, Gilbert dreams of becoming a lawyer, and Queenie longs to escape her Lincolnshire roots. Hope and humanity meet stubborn reality as the play traces the tangled history between Jamaica and the UK. A company of 40 actors were filmed live on the Olivier Theatre stage in this timely and moving story.
  • Mrs Hide, Head of Geography, will be leaving us at the end of this term to take up a post at Haute Vallee school.  While only joining the College in January 2019, she has done much to sustain and increase our students' enjoyment of Geography.  We wish her every success in her new role.  Miss Welburn will be Acting Head of Geography from September.

And finally, as soon as lockdown began and College closed, we launched JCGtv.  I know for many of us this has become an important part of our day.  However, as we start to return to something closer to normality, we have decided that today will be the last daily broadcast.  We will still have JCGtv and post videos as and when it is appropriate rather than daily.  It's become a great vehicle to celebrate the fantastic community here at College.  JCGtv certainly kept us together when we couldn't be together.  Thank you to everyone who has contributed videos; I have loved watching them all.  And a huge thanks to Mr Vibert, Mr Milner and Mr Bowley for their very many videos.  Thank you too to the team behind JCGtv; Mr Vibert, Mr Marett and Lily our Deputy Head Girl.  It's been a great whole College team effort.   Take care.   Yours, Carl Howarth Principal
